San Diego Comic-Con is like Christmas for loves of pop culture.

While not everything new is announced or premiered there, it pretty much feels that’s exactly what happens, making it the most wonderful time of the year if you crave trailers and clips and panels of the stars and producers of your favourite, or soon-to-be-favourite shows and movies dishing everything you want and need to know.

While I have yet to make it there, one day I will; until that hallowed day arrives, I can bask in the tidal wave of news that emerge from the event, live and in-person for the first time in three years thanks to a certain pandemic we all know and revile, and fill my already crowded schedule with shows and film yet to come …

(This is, by the way, just a sample of the announcements and reveals made; for all the trailers, go to Gizmodo and for highlights, go to EW‘s Best of Comic-Con 2022.

STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS S3

Following the cliffhanger ending of the second season, [creator and showrunner Mike] McMahan said the third would follow Captain Freeman’s trial for allegedly destroying the Pakled homeworld. This continues the series’ ongoing storyline about the Pakleds. The third season also explores the new relationship between Beckett Mariner and Jennifer Sh’reyan, but McMahan said Mariner’s romantic relationship would not become the focus of the series as her character arc was still based on her friendships and her relationship with her mother, Captain Freeman. He noted that Mariner and Freeman had grown closer throughout the second season and the latter’s arrest would lead to a new dynamic, with Mariner not “directing her energy in the most applicable way” in the third season. Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3 on Paramount+ on 25 August.

  • Excitingly, there’s going to be a crossover between Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks which “will include a crossover episode featuring both live-action and animation, as Lower Decks‘ Ensign Beckett Mariner (voiced by Tawny Newsome) and Ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) drop by the U.S.S. Enterprise.” (TVLine)

Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.

Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.
