Do zombies speak French? Mais oui! The Returned debuts 31 October on Sundance

To be fair, the undead in this particularly original riff on the ascendant zombie genre are not mindless flesh-eating drones at all.

Rather they are the dead of one particular small French village who walk back into their homes, and the lives of family and friends, blissfully unaware they have been dead for quite some time.

Unfortunately for them, their family and friends are all too aware they died, and find the sudden reappearance of their deceased loved ones unsettling indeed.

(A similar theme was explored in the brilliant British TV series In the Flesh.)

Based on the French film, Les Revenants, The Returned also had the added mystery – as if there wasn’t mystery aplenty already! – of a possible serial killer lurking in the ranks of the now undead citizens.

With a soundtrack courtesy of Scottish post-rock band Mogwai, this is a very stylish, intriguing and utterly beguiling look at what happens when life refuses to bow down to death.

The Returned premieres on Sundance Channel on 31 October (yes Halloween!)

  1. Hmmm.

    Salut!

Sounds fun, but I am loathe to entertain a zombie vehicle; then again, I love many a French film and series. Moreover, I live for Hallowe’en! Luckily, I shall be in San Francisco for All Hallows’ Eve this year … the zombies will have to wait pour Moi. 🙂

    Cheers!

  2. It’s amazing how much French I remember from high school. I managed to translate most of what you wrote before reading the full translation. Good on your Miss Fields! LOL

Bonjour! I used to hate zombies mais maintenant j’adore (well mostly; there are limits! LOL) I figure a French version will be tres mystérieux and chic and like you I adore French movies, TV shows, even funky modern accordian pop! LOL Love it all. We have to totally get together sometime and watch French films et emissions till our eyes pop!

Wow SF for Hallowe’en! That would be SO cool. I mean San Francisco anytime really but Hallowe’en would be brilliant! One day … what to go as? What are you planning as your costume? There must be pics!
