Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. But when an evil force threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Now, 500 years later, that same evil has returned and it’s up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the legendary last dragon to restore the fractured land and its divided people. However, along her journey, she’ll learn that it’ll take more than a dragon to save the world—it’s going to take trust and teamwork as well. (synopsis courtesy Flickering Myth)
We may be a lot of good and glorious things but we are also fiendishly adept at lifting and holding the knife to our own collective throat.
Our capacity for shortsighted self destruction is on display again in Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon where our titular hero, voiced by Kelly Marie Tran, has to deal with infighting, a shortfall of dragons and a returning evil.
Phew! That’s a LOT to deal with but having watched the delightful trailer, the film looks like a beguiling mix of endearing characterisation, vibrant good humour and Tomb Raider-eseque action sequences, all of which signal another delightful animation adventure for Disney fans.
Raya and the Last Dragon is due for release on 12 March 2021 in USA and on 25 March 2021 in Australia.
