Mickey Mouse, the pioneer and the pride of Disney’s animation powerhouse, is back in the short form cartoon business and the results are nothing less than marvellous.

A pleasing mix of cutting edge animation and retro look and feel, the cartoons have been playing on The Disney Channel as 3 minute animated interludes between the end of one program and the beginning of another.

The latest cartoon, Shifting Gears, amusingly showcases a slapstick-heavy battle of the wills between Mickey who wants to go surfing at the beach and his car who most definitely does not.

It’s engaging, funny and the animation harks back to the energy and eye-popping humour of the golden age of Disney shorts and yes, even Looney Tunes back in the ’40s and ’50s.

It’s a joy to watch and may just make you re-think that trip to the beach on a hot, sweltering summer’s day …

And here, courtesy of Indiewire are the two cartoon shorts that preceded Shifting Gears – “Wish Upon A Coin, directed by William Reiss, is a Disney mash-up masterpiece. Movie Time, directed by Dave Wasson, is an epic of comic destruction.”
