Pssst! Can I share a secret with you?

When Jurassic Park first filled cinemas with dinosaurs and screaming humans way back in the near-primeval days of 1993, preceded by a marketing campaign so intensely relenting and exciting in the way it built expectations to a near-unmeetable level, I wasn’t all that impressed by it.

I loved the idea of dinosaurs coming alive again, adored the blockbustery narrative and warmed to the characters to the point where I was heavily invested in whether they lived or or not, but as a film overall? Meh …

Then I happened to see it again in the cinemas six months after it opened – this was back when films stuck around for longer than a nanosecond in theatres – and LOVED it and have done ever since.

The only explanation is that marketing hype ruined it for me, and free from it half a year out from its initial release, I was free from its enervating effects and could appreciate the film on its own terms.

Now with a flew of sequels in its wake, the Jurassic franchise is well and truly part and parcel of the pop culture landscape, and it’s exciting to see another instalment just over a month away, the final entry in the current trilogy, following Jurassic World (2015) and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018).

Once more to the dinos my friends and get ready to run because, this time around, humanity in no loner the main game in town …

Jurassic World: Dominion opens 9 June 2022 in Australia and 10 June in US & UK.
