Seventy-five years from today, the human race has been cast from a dying Earth to wander the stars in a vast fleet of arks—each shaped by its inhabitants into a diverse and fascinating new environment, with its own rules and eccentricities.

When her sister disappears while responding to a mysterious alien distress call, Eryn insists on being part of the crew sent to look for her. What she discovers on Candidate-623 is both terrifying and deadly. When the threat follows her back to the fleet and people start dying, she is tasked with seeking out a legendary recluse who may just hold the key to humanity’s survival. (official synopsis via io9)

Diving into an epically expansive new space opera series has to be one of the most exciting things you can do.

At least, if you’re an avid book readers who loves escaping to thrilling new places with amazing characters who are usually right up against it in a fraught, fast-paced narrative.

So the news that Gareth L. Powell has a new series, Stars and Bones, in the offing is exciting indeed, especially when here in the blighted surrounds of August 2021 where COVID has us more assuredly in a lockdown unending, there is no chance of going ANYWHERE.

Books, however, are no slaves to reality and necessary government edict so here at least there is an opportunity to take off across the vast reaches of space with people for whom survival is not a given and could very well be a possibility too far.

Yes, we have to wait until 2022 to read this particularly exciting new adventure in full but thanks to io9, we can at least dip our toes in the narrative water and see what awaits, hopefully in a pandemic untroubled year …
