In a world full of pears, what can you find to fill your pit? A story about longing, love, and finding your other half. …Your heart will break and rejoice as the main character Avo, a lonely avocado roaming the streets of New York City, searches for something to fill its pit. (synopsis via Laughing Squid)

Life can be a lonely business, and even if you have found the peace of being your own person, it’s still lovely to have the special someone with you.

Finding that person, however, can be way easier said than done as The Pits, a beautifully-affecting short film from writer-director-puppeteer David Bizarro and puppetry company Evening Squire Productions, demonstrates in its sweetly agonising story.

In this tale to which anyone with a beating can relate, Avo wanders the cold, cruel streets of New York, home to the mocking cruelty of Ban and Ana, in search of the perfect someone or something to fill his pit.

Many things are tried but it’s not until he finds Cado that he finds his long-sought other half and all that searching can be put behind them.

The Pits, which has been featured in The New York Times and accepted for screening at over 30 festivals worldwide, is a gem that speaks to the human need for connection and love far more powerfully than many longer, rom-com-y feature films have managed.

Watch it and be reassured, if your faith is lacking that the Cado to your Avo is out there waiting somewhere …
