With War For the Planet of the Apes, the third instalment of the modern iteration of the legendary franchise just one very short (or long depending on how eager you are to see it) week away, it’s a good time to catch up on what brought us and our future ape oppressors to this point.

Blake Faucette and Matthew Williams of Distractotron have put together a brief but exhaustive look at the history of Planet of the Apes including all the movies, comic books, TV shows, merchandise; in effect, everything that has ever entered the orbit of the franchise, right up to this point.

If you’ve never taken the time to find out where the franchise came from, and what’s informed the modern suite of films, this is a great place to start.

And be super nice to the chimpanzees and gorillas the next time you’re at the zoo OK?
