From creators Steven Zaillian and Richard Price, The Night Of is an eight-part limited series that delves into the intricate story of a fictitious murder case in New York City. The series follows the police investigation and legal proceedings, all the while examining the criminal justice system and the purgatory of Rikers Island, where the accused awaits his trial.
The Night Of stars John Turturro and Riz Ahmed and was directed by Steven Zaillian and James Marsh. It is executive produced by Zaillian, Price, Jane Tranter, James Gandolfini, and Peter Moffat; co-executive produced by Garrett Basch, Nancy Sanders and Mark Armstrong.
Filmed in and around Manhattan, the HBO series is based on the BBC’s Criminal Justice, created by Peter Moffat.
The quest for justice is seldom smooth or straightforward.
That much becomes clear to Nasir Khan who finds himself suspected of murder after a clandestine night out with a young woman turns from fantasy to nightmare when wakes up after a night of sex and drugs to find her dead beside him.
He has no knowledge of what’s happened and there’s no one really in his corner save for world weary detective Jack Stone (the incomparable John Turturro) who despite himself decides to investigate further and finds things are not what they seem.
Still with so much evidence against him, can Nasir hold out any hope of the truth, whatever that may turn out to be, being revealed? And what if the overwhelming body of evidence if correct and he really is a murderer?
Ah the deliciously, dark twists of the human psyche and the justice system it has given birth to, all of which will be on full display in this gripping 8 parts series and by the look of things will have you guessing right to the very end.
The Night Of premieres on HBO on 10 July.
