It is a common lament of Browncoats, those of us who LOVE Firefly, Joss Whedon’s cancelled-far-too-soon sci-fi western – yes the word “LOVE” must be italicised at all times such is our fervour – that there will likely never be another iteration of this wonderful show.

Of course, you should never say never especially since the cast have indicated more than once than they’re all up for a reunion – this happened after a fashion when everyone came together for Firefly Online – but at this stage, there’s no sign of more episodes joining the 13 already in existence and the movie Serenity which tied up many of the loose ends from the TV show.

Even so, a fan can dream can’t they?

Yes indeed, and it’s even better when it’s someone as talented as Stephen Byrne, a gifted animator with a knack for gorgeously-detailed animation (not to mention an awesome animated Doctor Who trailer) is the one doing not just the dreaming but the actual doing. (To see how intense the doing was, check out the production diary video below the trailer.)

It’s the most sublime 40 seconds you’re likely to have all day and brings back all the emotions any of us have ever had watching including an intensely poignant scene where Zoë Washburne reaches out for her – SPOILER ALERT!! – dearly-departed husband Hoban aka “Wash” and finds only a hologram.

You can only hope someone will see this exquisitely-detailed, emotionally-packed trailer and decide that an animated series is what we all need and yes, need now.

And if you’ve ever wondered what the Firefly cast would look like as Disney characters, wonder no more for Stephen Byrne has taken care of that idle curiosity too …
